Put On Syringe Driver. How Long Can Anybody Survive After This?

default
Posted on Fri, 22 Mar 2013
Question: Thanks you. My Father in Law has been put on a syringe driver, he lives at the other end of the country. My Mum had one and passed 16 hrs later. My Husband is in denial and I am concerned about how long we have to get to his Dad. I know that they would both like to say goodbye. I am sorry to ask the vulgar question about "how long has he got"? When my Mum was put on it we were told about 2 days. I am looking for as specific a time frame as possible including time spent unconscious. Thank you.

Hello,
Welcome to healthcare magic.
I am very sad to know that your father in law is on palliative care and at the end of it.

It is extremely difficult to guess that how much time it take. It certainly varies from person to person. It says from few hours to couple of days. I think you should hope to reach there soon. Your hope can help him take better breath and you can bid bye.

In case of lymphoma there are some causes of unconscious.
It may be due to involvement of the disease itself or intracranial bleeding due to low platelet count.
In case of unconscious patient, GCS score gives some hints. The low the score the less chance of recovery.

Only your concerned doctor can give you a idea.

I hope I have been some help of your query.
Take care.
