Question: Hello Sir, I have been facing hair loss since 2011. At the very start I could not understand it but in later stages It was more than hair loss. From 2010 to 2011, I faced severe hair loss. After 2011, it was my job start so moved to different cities and continued to notice hair loss which by the time was not excessive but hairline continued to recede. I Tried several home remedies and Ayurveda tricks but to no avail. In dec 2013, I had to consult with a dermatologist who recommended me minoxidil 10% and finasteride with Sebamed revitalising shampoo. This treatment I went on with for more than 2 years. The finasteride effect was actually real and I started to feel it’s side effects which after the second consultation with doctor was stopped and had to continue with minioxidil 10% and androanagen tab and Sebamed shampoo. Even after having used for more than 2 years I noticed little effect and then subsequently no visible effect at all. In my family, my grandfather had no hair loss problem and my father noticed it in after 50s. My first dermatologist pointed out it as male pattern baldness. I don’t face severe hair loss now a days but I can notice very low density in my crown and temple. From front side till back side I can actually see my skin. As I can see there’s very less effect of traditional male pattern baldness medicines on me, I figured out in this portal on some topic that people who are using saw palmetto and follihair tabs getting good results. Please suggest me some alternate medicines with less or no side effects in the long run Sir.

Brief Answer:
Regarding androgenetic alopecia

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you.
I am Dr. Kakkar (Dermatologist and Venereologist).I have noted your concern.

For male pattern baldness or Androgenetic alopecia, topical Mnoxidil 5% solution and oral Finasteride 1mg are the only approved remedies. The sexual side effects of finasteride are rare and if at all they occur they are temporary and resolve with continued treatment. So, you should have continued taking oral finasteride. Moreover, in the long run finasteride does not have any side effects. I therefore suggest you to restart finasteride. Though Saw palmetto is an alternative but it is not an approved treatment for pattern baldness. In addition to medical treatment, you can try other remedies like Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy. The last option of course is that of Hair Transplant.
