Pain In The Mid Back Which Radiates From The Neck

default
Posted on Wed, 15 Jan 2020
Question: Pain in the mid back which radiates from the neck all the way to my lower spine. This is causing my Arms and legs to feel heavy and with mild twitching when I am sitting down. Feels like something is inflated in my mid back. No loss of strength or flexibility or muscle.

I am having these symptoms for the past 1 week with the twitching which is very random and happens in my limbs and back and side of ribs (not continuous).

Is this a sign of a neurological or motor disease since twitching is involved? All these started after I exercised hard like a week ago.
I also have a vitamin D3 deficiency.
I am very concerned that this could be something to do with a motor disease

Brief Answer:
Can be due to back muscle spasm.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The pain in the spine and mid back that you have along with twitching can be due to muscle spasm caused by the hard exercise. It can cause a pain and spasm due to mild nerve root irritation at the level of spine. A deficiency of Vitamin D can add to the problem. This is not likely to be related to a motor disease. You can start with rest, hot compress, application of local analgesic gel and oral muscle relaxants. Taking regular vitamin D3 supplements will also help. You can also consult your orthopedician and get oral muscle relaxants prescribed for relief.
I hope this answers your query.
In case you have additional questions or doubts, you can forward them to me, and I shall be glad to help you out.
Wishing you good health.

Thanks for the reply doctor, is mild twitching common with back issues? Also, do you think I should try and see a Neuro doctor for the same? My movements are all normal but have a heavy/tired feeling in my limbs and I think its all coming from my spine.

Do you think I should go and see and orthopedic doctor for the same?
Also, based on my symptoms is it worth getting an EMG done?

Brief Answer:
You can consult a neurologist.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
Mild twitching is common with back issues. You can see a neurologist. You can get an MRI scan of the spine done to find out any nerve root compression. If the neurologist feels necessary then EMG can also help.
Hope my answer is helpful.

Brief Answer:
Motor disease not likely to improve.

Detailed Answer:
A motor disease is not likely to improve. Your twitches are more likely to be related to the back pain and muscle spasms. You can wait and start with oral muscle relaxants and see if it improves further.
In case it deteriorates then do consult a neurologist. It is good that recent MRI scan was normal. No need for a repeat scan now.

So with a motor disease, the twitching wont improve right? I feel my condition has improved but still have mild twitching but less than what I have had over the weekend. Should I still go and consult a Neurologist based on your opinion?

Dr, I did check for B12 and its normal. I sometimes feel slight numbness( more of heavy feeling in my hands which starts from mid back travelling to neck shoulder and then arms/legs). I also have some needle sensation in my middle back.

One more question, is twitching due to spine issues normal?

I also, have pain in my left calf (1 on a scale of 10). Also, feel like a pulsating sensation or heartbeat sensation on both my feet. I doesnt feel like its twitching but like hearbeats or pulse sensation.

My middle spine is hurting, do I go and see a orthopedic doctor?

One more question, just noticed this. Is it normal that my 4th toe besides the smallest toe is kind of curved it and smaller as compared to the 4th toe on the left feet?

I am experiencing all sort of things on my left and have a sharp pain like someone is pressing against my nerve or mid spine(bearable for now)

Brief Answer:
You can consult an orthopedician for an examination.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Slight numbness with normal B12 levels can be due to spine issues. This can also cause twitches.
This can be related to electrolyte disturbance also. You can consult an orthopedician and get yourself examined for proper diagnosis.
The change in the toe size can be a normal variation also. It is not worrisome.
Regards.
