Question: My wife fell two weeks ago and cut her elbow. Her internist put butterfly stitches on it. Now, wound closed but her elbow is severely swollen like a large golf ball, is turning red and starting to hurt. This an infection or possible broken bone or both? I have pictures if you want to see them.

Brief Answer:
Abscess or hematoma, X-ray and ultrasound helps, Aspiration SOS

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for your query.
Noted the history and seen the photos.

The most probable causes I can think about are:
- Abscess formation.
- Hematoma.
- Chances of fracture if:
the movements are painful from the beginning.
X-rays should be done to confirm or rule out the fracture.

The following things can help:
- Ultrasound.
- Aspiration with the needle.
- Continue antibiotic and anti-inflammatory medicines.

I hope this answer helps.
Please give feedback.

With Regards.
