My Index Finger Is Curved Into My Middle Finger. Not

default
Posted on Sun, 9 Feb 2020
Question: My index finger is curved into my middle finger. Not sure why and what caused this . I have been having pain and stiffness and some tremor in that finger and the middle finger for the last 7-10 days. Yesterday I had a sharp pain or cramp in my index hand which spread to my wrist, forearm and elbow.

I am 100% sure it was straight before yesterday, not sure what happened. What could have caused this?

I am low on vitamin d3 and taking pills for the same.

I have attached image of my left and right hand. Also the circled section is the right hand where I have the pain and stiffness.

Should I go and see an orthopedic for the same? I have an EMG/NCV scheduled with a neurologist for some twitching this Thursday will that be helpful in finding out something?

Also, my index finger moves side ways or back and forth for like 2-3 seconds, not sure if it’s twitching or tremor

Brief Answer:
?arthritis

Detailed Answer:
Hi there

Thanks for the query

I have reviewed your attached image and video. It doesn't look like anything sinister like an acute infection, abscessyor any fracture.

It's possible there may be joint inflammation if you have any pain in the joints of that finger. It's best you get it looked at by a Rheumatologist to rule out various arthritis. You need certain blood tests done.

The tremors are coarse more like twitching of the muscles which needs to be investigated with NCS or EMG.

I hope I have answered your query.

I will be available to answer your follow up queries.

I am seeing a neurologist for the same. Have EMG/ncv on Thursday.

What blood tests should I do? Is it in specific to arthritis or something else?

Also should I see orthopedic or rheumatologist?

Do you think the twitches are something to worry about , neuro thinks it’s benign and common

Since it involves the joints, a Rheumatologist will be a better clinician for this problem. We need blood tests to rule out Rheumatoid arthritis, SLE etc. It's best to show a Rheumatologist and then do the required blood tests.

If you are experiencing pain radiating from the back of the neck to the hand, then it can be due to slip disc and spondylosis of the cervical spine in the neck that compresses the nerves. If any tingling and numbness only in the hands we need to rule out Carpal tunnel syndrome.

SLE is Systemic lupus erythematosus. it's an autoimmune disorder.

Curved finger can be due to contractures, joint damage or tendon disorders. It may have been gradually curving but you may have happened to notice it suddenly.

Is this common or normal? I have asked my doctor he says it’s normal and no need for seeing any specialist. He has ordered some blood words like electrolyte imbalance and magnesium,b12 and so on

Since after examination by your doctor he has deemed it not to be pathological, then it must likely is benign. The blood tests are to look for salt imbalance in your blood and nutritional deficiency.

It could be a normal finding and it just caught you off guard when you happened to notice your fingers in more detail than usual!
