Question: My husband has had a number of health issues over the past few years, including, acute kidney failure and he has also been diagnosed with a low platelet count. Over the past couple of weeks he has developed a red rash on his lower legs. Any ideas on what could be causing the rash?

Brief Answer:
Corticosteroids and diabetes may have caused it

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, welcome to Ask a doctor's service.
I read your query and here is my advice.

I see the photo you attached and I believe this rash on his foot may be caused by different conditions.
I believe that his skin is more fragile and thin due to corticosteroids usage.
The skin also seems infected by a fungal infection.
Corticosteroids and possible diabetes may have contributed to it.
I suppose he was taking corticosteroids.
Also low platelet count may have caused small rash or petechiae.
His leg looks like it has impaired vascularization which may be caused by diabetes
You can give me further information about drugs he is taking, about his glucose levels and the drugs he is taking.
I believe antifungal creams may work. Also keeping glucose levels stabilised and platelets also is necessary.

Hope I have answered the question.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
