Question: My daughter is 25 and has a swollen lymph node in her side of neck area. All of her bloodwork was fine but also had an ultrasound of neck area. We were told that there were multiple nodes which measured at 1 cm and the the one measured at 2 cm. There was no neoplasm present but suggested having a biopsy with a surgeon or the other option is a pet scan but they were concerned with the amount of radiation she would get for her age. i would like your suggestion.

Brief Answer:
surgical excision biopsy is best recommended for your daughter.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to Ask A Doctor services.
I have read your query and here is my advise.

* As per my surgical experience, there can be various reasons for multiple lymph nodes
in neck area as non specific lymphadenitis, tuberculosis, sarcoidosis, many
granulomatous disorders or others.

* However, when reports are not conclusive and PET scan is not advisable considering
age for radiation exposure, the best way to get the final diagnosis is the tissue
specimen examination for the histology architecture of the lymph node via surgical
excision biopsy.

In my opinion, biopsy of the prominent lymph node is the gold standard measure to
diagnose her condition and treat further in best possible manner.

Wish her best recovery and health.
Regards.
