My 13 Year Old Son Had A Renal Ultrasound Conducted
Question: My 13 year old son had a renal ultrasound conducted due to having a UTI.The results are: Mild bilateral pelviectasis but without XXXXXXX hydronephrosis. The pelviectasis is within physiologic normal limits. Follow-up

Let me explain this finding to the best of my knowledge.
Bilateral Pelviectasis means that the pelvices of the both the kidneys are enlarged. This usually is the result of some obstruction at the urinary tract. Since it is bilateral (both sides), the obstruction is possibly at the urethra. Since it is mild and within physiologic limits (normal range of size of pelvis of kidney), there is nothing much to worry. To find the obstruction, doctor usually suggests voiding cystourethrography. This test is done by instilling XXXXXXX in urinary tract and taking images to find obstruction. I don't think this test is needed. However I need to see full report to suggest better.
Such obstruction may be from birth. Your son is 13 year old. Was his ultrasound during pregnancy stage normal or showed any kidney changes?
Having one or two episodes of UTI does not cause damage to kidneys. A recurrent UTI may cause problems. In your child's case, there is no hydronephrosis (swelling of kidney). So his kidneys will most probably stay safe.
Most kids outgrow pelviectasis by themselves as they grow.
You may support him by giving cleaner water to drink. One or two drops of juice of crushed radish leaves (once a day for few days) will provide anti-oxidant support. Antibiotics according to urine culture and sensitivity report will clear infection.

Thank you for your response. My prenatal ultrasound had no such indication. I am curious as to where the obstruction would be

But for now, lets assume that it is a recent onset dilatation. It could be due to a kidney stone, a tight foreskin, injury to urethra, etc
A surgeon can do more tests to find cause which may include putting dyes in blood e.g in voiding cystourethrogram or coronal CT urogram. There is some possibility of XXXXXXX to damage kidney. So I would suggest a repeat ultrasound to see if pelviectasis is increasing or decreasing after antibiotic.
