I've Been Having Calf Cramps And Ankle Pain (a Sort

default
Posted on Tue, 3 Dec 2019
Question: I've been having calf cramps and ankle pain (a sort of buzzing like nerves electrified, referred sciatica?) for five months. Sometimes they wake me up at night. I'm 63, very fit with a healthy diet, and work out on a stationary recumbent bike in the gym every other day. But I had been doing that for a year before this appeared. I recently stopped my workouts for a week and the cramps and pain continued, so I'm not sure they're connected. I take calcium/magnesium/Vit D tablets (4/day = 800mg calcium, 300 mg magnesium, 5mcg Vit D), eat a lot of bananas, and have been working at getting more salt into my diet. I've tried home remedies: pickle juice, mustard, epsom salt soaks, hot water bottles. Not much help. Tylenol helps, but is not the solution. Five years ago I had chronic sciatica from swollen discs in my lower back, but that has been resolved for five years, and this feels nothing like that pain, which was down my legs. I work at a computer all day, but don't think that is the problem. Walking, even not very far, seems to fire it up. A standing/walking combo (like browsing thru a museum) really fires it up. Is this to do with diet? Exercise? Working? Something else? Can I go back to my exercise bike? So frustrated! I am traveling in Spain so I cannot go to my regular doctor for another month.

Brief Answer:
Sciatica vs DVT

Detailed Answer:
Hi there

Thanks for the query

It is possible that this pain is not getting relieved because it is of neurological origin due to the compression of the nerves by the discs.

I say this because there is an element of tingling and numbness and pins and needles sensation which you experience.

It would be useful to get an MRI of the lumbar spine to confirm the security of the disc compression.

A medicine called pregabalin or gabapentin can help you but since they are controlled drugs you may not get easy access to them unless from your GP.

Avoid bending forward or lifting weights.

Perform back strengthening exercises with a physiotherapist as this can really help.

Also a Doppler venous scan can help differentiate it from a deep vein thrombosis or DVT which can present itself similarly.

Thanks and regards.
