Brief Answer:
MIRENA is not suitable choice for you now....

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for the query to HCM,
At 27 years of age , with one son 12 months old, I am not sure why were you advised MIRENA IUD. This is a hormonal IUD and is prescribed for woman usually in 35-40 age group with heavy menses or endometrial hyperplasia. MIRENA is progesterone IUD and is naturally going to cause progesterone side effects with increased PMS symptoms- mood swings, sore breasts, headache, nausea, lower abdominal pain, bloating. The answer to it is increased daily water intake to neutralise these effects.
Irregularity in menses is expected again as MIRENA is contributing to increased progesterone and hence menses would be delayed. Usually menses stop completely for many women but if continues, then do get irregular. But in your case post delivery a hormonal IUD was not indicated at all. Instead a non-hormonal IUD like copper-t 380U should have been considered. You should discuss it with your gynecologist and take an informed decision now, if you wish your menses to be regular and tolerable PMS symptoms.
Regards
