Question: To be answered by an oncologist

Hi Dr. Rynne,

Is there any link between melanoma cancer and elevated PSA levels?

Hi, also you do need to know that I have never been checked for melanoma skin, but I have multiple spots that I cannot identify, my wife says the same. In face, she believes I do have it and there must be a link ? Thanks!

Brief Answer:
Melanoma has to link with prostate ca or PSA levels.

Detailed Answer:
Hello, Sir.

I understand your concern.

There is absolutely no link between Melanoma and PSA levels.

Melanomas are predominantly caused by inbuilt genetic alterations, exposure to UV rays, family history, low socioeconomic state and personal characteristics -Blue eyes, fair and/or red hair, pale complexion; skin reaction to sunlight (easily sunburned); freckling.

Neither prostate cancer has a link with melanoma.

Morphologically melanoma can be STRONGLY suspected if the multiple spots show a rule of "ABCDE " over a time period-----They are.

A: Asymmetry of the spots.
B: Irregular Border.

C: Color variations: Especially red, white, and blue tones in a brown or black lesion.

D: Diameter greater than 6 mm.
E: Elevated surface.

Diagnostic procedures like Excisional Biopsy are strongly recommended if the spots show 4 or more features.

In the absence of such features, these spots could be simple benign moles or unspecified freckles.

I can guide you better if you can upload the images of these "multiple spots".

Post your further queries if any.

Thank you.
