Posted on Thu, 14 May 2015
Question: Hi - Currently taking 62.5 of Synthroid and recently started 7.5 mcg of SR T3 (9 days ago) I'm assuming this is relatively a low dose to start at. How soon should I begin to feel any effects from the addition of T3?

Brief Answer:
7 to 10 days

Detailed Answer:
Good day,
Noted your concern. Why was T3 started along with T4 ( synthroid) ?
T3 is the active hormone. T4 has to be converted to T3 to act. T3 has fast onset of action, but has a short half life.
Endocrine society doesn't recommend combination of T3 and T4 in most cases. T4 (synthroid) alone would suffice in most cases.

You should start noticing the difference in 7- 10 days after starting T3

Free T3 lab value had room for improvement. However, my Free T4 levels were where they needed to be. TSH was 3.9. Still feeling hypothyroid symptoms - hence adding the T3.

Brief Answer:
Increase Synthroid, rather than adding T3

Detailed Answer:
Did you do the blood tests for Free T4 after taking Synthroid or on fasting? If non fasting sample, how long after taking tablet did you do the blood test. I would rather increase the dose of Synthroid to 88 from 62.5 rather than adding T3. T4 will be comberted to T3 and hence increasing the dose of T4 would naturally optimise the levels of T3 as well. Could you attach the blood reports please ?
