Question: Hello - I tested negative for genital stds and went to have my dr do a swab for oral std but he said he didn’t feel it was needed based on symptoms and presentation. Is that possible-to be able to rule out a test based on presentation?

Brief Answer:
We recommend doing STD tests based on the symptoms and sexual history.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Usually, we recommend doing STD tests based on the symptoms and sexual history.
So, if you didn't do oral sex and don't have symptoms I think you don't need to do a swab test for oral STD.

I hope my answer helps you. Feel free to ask further.
Regards.

Thank you for your reply. So to be more specific, I had a one time exposure with a (believed to be) non infected female. I am male. My dr looked in my mouth/throat, felt my lymph nodes and glands and also looked at my ears. I have had a minimally sore throat and nasal discharge. My dr feels that between the exposure, the symptoms, and my appearance, a throat culture was not needed. My specific question is this - do I trust my dr and his word that I have nothing to worry about? Is it possible to dismiss a test based on my visit to the dr?

Hello,
I am sorry for my late response.

Based on your history, not risky sexual intercourse and without symptoms I agree with your doctor that you don't need to do a throat culture.

I hope my answer helps you.

Thank you. I did perform oral and did have slightly sore throat and runny nose. Thinking it’s coincidental cold/allergy symptoms. It was a one time event. I know it’s rare for oral symptoms to present themselves. But if in fact I had oral std symptoms, they’d get worse, not better, right?
Just nervous to resume regular activities sexually without reassurance. Thank you!!!

Yes, if you have symptoms of STD usually without treatment would get worse and not better.
Furthermore I think that these symptoms could be related to a viral situation and not STD.

I hope my answer helps you.
