Is Severe Leg Pain A Symptom Of DVT?

default
Posted on Tue, 24 Nov 2015
Question: My question is based on symtoms that I have experienced but I am not experiencing at this moment. I have experienced pain so severe in my legs when I have been sleeping that has been so excruciating that I would not be able to move. I would scream and be in tears with the pain. It has only happened a few times thankfully. It is not a XXXXXXX horse which in itself can be painful but this is by far at least 10x more painful than any XXXXXXX horse ever could be and feels like it is located inside an artery inside the inner part of my thighs. It has not lasted long thankfully, but the pain lasts between 1-5min.
Is this a symtom of deep vein thrombosis in the legs?

Brief Answer:
Muscle spasm, Thrombosis, Nutritional deficiencies

Detailed Answer:
Hi there.

Welcome to Healthcare Magic.

Thanks for the query.

It appears that young child be experiencing cramping in the calf muscles. There can be numerous causes like Electrolyte imbalance due to calcium and Magnesium deficiencies, slip disc in the lower back that is compressing the nerves to your legs, arthritis in the knees with associated Baker's cysts etc.

It is advisable to take a step by step method to approach this problem.

Firstly apply hot water bag three times a day to the affected region. Eat plenty of fresh fruits and green leafy vegetables. Drink 6 to 8 glasses of water daily. Take Multivitamin and mineral supplements with Magnesium and Manganese. Keep your limbs elevated over a pillow while sleeping.

Get blood tests for Serum Vitamin D3 level, Potassium level, Uric acid level to rule out Gout, complete blood count to rule out anaemia and infections, Xray of the knee and ultrasound or Doppler of the vessels to rule out thrombosis.

This way we can find the cause of your pain and solve it.

I hope I have answered your query.

I will be available to answer your follow up queries.

Dear Dr. Aashish XXXXXXX Thank you for your quick reply. Yes I felt satisfied with the answer to my question. There were two things that I did not understand but overall was happy with your response. One was where you wrote, 'it appears that young child be experiencing cramping in the calf muscles.' I am not a young child and the pain is not in the calf muscles but in the upper inner thighs and the pain has not happened often but has been very infrequent. The pain does not seem muscular at all. I do have osteo-arthritis in my right knee, hips, neck, hands and perhaps my spine although I do not know. I am not experiencing pain in any of these areas at the moment though. I also have arthritis in my left ankle which was broken severly many years ago. I am sleeping with a pillow between my legs as suggested by you and also my doctor. Thank you again for your quick response.

Brief Answer:
Vitamin D deficiency, Hip problem

Detailed Answer:
Ho there.

I'm sorry for the typing error. Instead of 'young child', I meant to type 'you could'

Since you have arthritis, you could have a Baker's cyst in the back of the knee which may have ruptured and the fluid drained to your calves and around the knees causing stiffness and cramps such can extend to thighs.

If you have hip pain, you need Xray pelvis with both hips and kindly upload for my review.

You could get a few blood tests like Complete blood count, Serum Uric acid, Serum D dimer, Serum Vitamin D3.

This will help to rule out Gout, Clots and Osteoporosis/Osteomalacia.

Apply hot water bag to the painful regions. You could also very a Doppler scan of the lower limbs to rule out clots and ultrasound knee to look for Baker's cyst.

I hope I have answered your query.

Dr. Aashish Raghu
