Is Negative HIV RNA PCR Test Result After 12 Days Of Exposure Conclusive?

default
Posted on Sat, 24 Oct 2015
Question: I took a HIV RNA PCR test at 12 days post possible exposure and it came back negative.I am now at 22 days post possible exposure. I have had this bump for about a week on my neck. I also may have one swallow lymph node in the back of my neck. Should I be concerned? Are these possible acute HIV symptoms? I am posting a pic of the bump.
I have also uploaded a picture of me pointing to the possible lymph node. The tip of my finger is touching it. It is small.. soft and movable. I can feel it much better if I stretch my neck to one side.

Brief Answer:
Investigations advised.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query at HCM.
I understand your concern and situation.

The sensitivity of HIV PCR is more after 6-7 weeks. Therefore I would suggest you not to worry just repeat the after 7 weeks and a 4 th generation ELISA test after 12 weeks will be conclusive. As far as HIV infection is concerned it is too early to comment as your symptoms are non specific and can occur in any viral infection. If you are having lymph node I would suggest you to get an antibiotics like amoxclav after doctor prescription. If it increases in size visit a physician. Don't conclude anything as HIV. Just lead your normal life and wait for tests at correct time. Drink plenty of water daily.

Take care
