Posted on Mon, 5 May 2014
Question: My mother is 96 years old. They have her on Metroprolol 25 mg. She is tired and sleeping a lot. I have been giving this to her with breakfast. Should I be giving it to her at bedtime instead?

Brief Answer: Yes you can Detailed Answer: Hi Thanks for your query. I have read your query and her medical history as well. You can give metorpolol at bedtime. Though it is not a sleeping pill, it is known to cause some weakness. For daytime control of blood pressure she is already taking other medicines like hydrochlorthiazide and amlodipine, so blood pressure control will not be an issue. Hope it helps. Dr Vaishalee

Thank you so much for the prompt response. I'm wondering why so many different types of BP medicine. Is this normal for an elderly person?

Brief Answer: There may be reason for it Detailed Answer: Hi again Mostly a newly diagnosed person is started on single anti-hypertensive regime. Two medicines are started when the response to single medicine is sub-optimal and three are started when response to 2 medicines is suboptimal. I am not aware of her health status as concerns hypertension and other heart issues. The treating doctor will be better able to answer this question. Though I can say that too many medicines are not good for elderly people. Mostly because their liver is weak and metabolising of medicine is also slowed. Thus giving them minimal medicines is the best approach. Hope it helps. Dr Vaishalee
