Posted on Fri, 2 Jun 2017
Question: My son DOB is Sep 2016 . He is premature my one month and one week. Weight - 5.1 Head - 42cm. He has partial head control and cannot sit on his own. His activities are good, reaches out for objects, smiles, shows anxiety. The doctor says he has low body tone and high hypotonia and suggested to consult pediatric neurologist for opinion and go for physiotherapy. My query is whether low tone curable with physiotherapy or do I wait for couple of months as he is still in growing stage..

Brief Answer:
Physiotherapy should be done

Detailed Answer:
Hi, welcome to HCM. Can understand your concerns.

Age of child is 8 months, since child is 1 month premature, the corrected age is 7 months.

Neck holding is achieved at 3 months of age and sitting with support at 5 months of age. Social smile comes at 2 months of age. According to this, the development delay is present.

Physiotherapy is must as it will increase muscle strength and help child to attain motor milestones. There is no need to delay the physiotherapy. It will not harm child in any way.

I hope this helps.
Wishing your child good health.
Take care.
