Question: I have been diagnosed with barrets. No dysplacia. I have prescribed long term use of Pentocid 4 OD. Is it safe since long term usage is reported to lead to heart problems.

Brief Answer:
Continue treatment.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for your query.

I have gone through your query and shall make an effort to provide you with good professional recommendations specific to your questions.

The presence of Barrett's esophagus is associated with increased risk of developing an adenocarcinoma. I think 30 plus fold increased risk of the development of esophageal cancer in comparison with the general population.

If i had to treat the same case in my clinic i would have gone with same treatment and have seen patient with long term use Proton pump inhibitors without any problem.

Long term use is associated with some stomach tumor but that is animals, in humans it has not reported. Stomach polyp was mentioned, but were all benign. Other include increased risk of fractures and poor absorption of vitamin B12, are the side effects.

These long term effects are known to me but i have not come across patient who is having heart problem due to use of these agents.

I would also suggest you, apart from drug, certain other measures like losing weight, if overweight., change the diet, by reducing fat, chocolate, caffeine, and acid food and fluids (for example, citrus).stop smoking, avoiding excessive alcohol. avoid food and fluids for 90 to 120 minutes before going to bed, elevating the upper body when lying in bed will help.

Yet again, I duly appreciate your query to me, I do hope that you have found something useful to help you and I shall be glad to answer any further apprehensions.

Sincerely,
