Is It Safe To Have Long Lasting Risperidone Injection For Depression?

default
Posted on Mon, 29 Jun 2015
Question: am bipolar, 2 x3mg Risperdal daily, take vicodin & adderal to stay out of depression and stay manic most of the time. I am considering Risperdal SHOT for longer lasting anti-psychotic results, and LAMICTAL to even out bipolar cycles. Sound like a good plan?

Brief Answer:
Yes this sounds like a good plan.

Detailed Answer:
Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries

I can understand your concern. You have bipolar disorder and are on 6 mg Risperidone, Adderall and Vincodin. The manic symptoms are persisting.

Long acting Risperidone injectable preparation has been launched few years back as Risperidal Consta. The injectable preparation has been found to be equally efficacious the oral preparations and is relatively safer in terms of EPS and other side effects. The shots are advised every two weeks. The injections are approved for use as maintenance treatment in Bipolar Disorders. Some side effects like sedation, akathisia, increased appetite occur in less severity in Shots as compared to oral therapy. Also injections results in sustained delivery of drug to brain as compared to oral therapy. So in my opinion if cost of treatment is not an issue then Risperidal shots sound good plan.

Lamictal or Lamotrigine is also a mood stabiliser. The drug is very efficacious in depressive symptoms in bipolar disorder. This drug is also used in resistant depression. So the drug would help in your depression also in addition to mood stabilisation. This will also ameliorate the need of Vincodin and Adderall after some months and you will feel better.

In my opinion Lamictal and Risperidal Consta are better options as compared to your current prescription.

Thanks. I hope this helps you. Please don't hesitate to ask again for more doubts.

Take care
