Is It Possible To Replace Crown On My Top Front Teeth?

default
Posted on Wed, 17 Apr 2024
Question: I had 4 crowns placed on my top front teeth. The crowns made my teeth look too big, so I asked for a redo. Initially the dentist was going to remove the crowns and install new smaller ones, but is now saying that may be too difficult. He wants to now use a XXXXXXX disk to reshape my crowns. Won’t this compromise the integrity of the crowns? Don’t the crowns have to be polished and glazed? What are the pros and cons of these two approaches? What would you do?

Brief Answer:
I may do new crowns

Detailed Answer:
Hii first of all thank you for approaching us with your query. I read through it . I feel that if there is too much discrepancy in the size of the crowns I may remove it and do new ones. If there is slight discrepancy in the size I may reshape is minimally and see . If still the size is not corrected I will remove it and make new ones. Removal of newly fixed crowns is very difficult as the cements used to fix it might be very strong and many instances we may have to cut through the crowns and remove it part by part. But using discs and reducing the shape in large scale may not look esthetically neat as it can have rough surfaces. And polishing and glazing is needed, which cant be done intraorally especially glazing which has to be done extraorally(outside the mouth in the lab). In my opinion its better to remove and do new crowns(Havint seen the pic clinically so cant tell how large is the discrepancies in the size). Hope you understood what I meant. Thankyou and have a healthy day.
Thanks

I had the front crowns replaced in April, so I assume from what you said that this is rather recent and it will be difficult to get the crowns off? Can removing the crowns do further damage to the teeth underneath? My front teeth had some cracks because I grind my teeth a bit. Also, I assume that the front crowns can be polished inside the mouth, but that glazing requires the crowns to be removed. Does glazing add strength to the crowns and help fight deterioration? Should glazing always be done?

Brief Answer:
Glazing gives a shiny look

Detailed Answer:
Hiii thank you for your followup query. I read through it. First of all removing crowns may or maynot damage underlying tooth structure . It depends on which method you use to remove the crown. If you split the crowns n take it it wont cause much damage but it takes more time. Next is polishing can be done inside the mouth. Glazing requires taking it out to lab n doing . Glazing gives a shiny n smooth look to the crown adds to little strength for crown. Hope I have answered to your query. Thank you and have a healthy day. Dr Rohit
