Is Hemangioma In Liver A Cause For Concern?

default
Posted on Thu, 27 Aug 2015
Question: I have just had my gall bladder removed this week. My ultrasounds revealed something on the liver, which my doctor said "is probably a blood blister"' and sent me for a CT scan. During the removal of the gall bladder,he said he was unable to see exactly what it is because it is deeper in the liver - is 16mm and that he will now send me for an MRI. The CT scan did not enable him to make a conformed diagnosis on it. He doesn't seem to be worried about it and says he does not believe It is a tumor at all. I am terrified of course

Brief Answer:
The doctor suspects a hemangioma which is a clump of small blood vessels

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.

1. Your doctor has probably found a benign tumor in the liver which is called a hemangioma. This is a clump of blood cells. It is measuring 16 mm in sixe and is a small one.

2. Hemangiomas are commonly seen in normal people. This will not be seen during a gall bladder surgery because it is inside the liver.

3. A triple phase CT scan usually helps to confirm the diagnosis. However a small hemangioma measuring 16 mm might not be confirmed as it is a small lesion and difficult to demonstrate the CT scan characteristics adequately.

4. Doing a MRI scan will solve the problem and most likely confirm the finding as that of a hemangioma.

5. I understand your thoughts and that you are terrified about it. Going a step closer and getting the MRI scan done will help confirm the hemangioma. In most patients with suspected hemangiomas, we tell the patient to have another ultrasound scan of abdomen in 3 to 6 months to know if there is any change in the lesion size and nature. A hemangioma stays the same for months to years.

Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.

Hope your query is answered.
