Is Fracture Of Finger Possible Through Dog Bite?

default
Posted on Mon, 27 Apr 2015
Question: Hi I was bitten by my neighbors dog last night. I have a puncture wound on my right ring finger knuckle and another deep gash above my knuckle on the top outside toward my pinky. They bleed perfusely last night for 1 hr. I cleaned then with beta dine and bandaged. I woke up the morning at 4 am in extreme pain and swelling in this finger. I removed the bandage and stated ice compresses and ibuprofen. May question is could this dog have fractured my finger?

Brief Answer:
Less liekly to be bone fracture.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The dog bite is less likely to cause a bone fracture but can tear off the tendons or ligaments. The swelling can be due to associated soft tissue damage also.
It is best to continue using ice and strap the injured finger with the next healthy finger for proper support. The swelling will subside with rest and pain killers. In case the pain is acute and you are not able to move the finger then it is best to consult an orthopedician as a surgical repair of the tendon or soft tissue may be needed. Infection also needs to be ruled out.
I hope this answers your query.
