Is Follow Up Recommended For Benign Lump In Breast?

default
Posted on Mon, 20 Oct 2014
Question: Just curious if there should be any other follow up with a normal mammogram, and breast ultra sound that reads 1 cm benign mass in r breast and 9 mm, 4 mm benign mass in left breast. Last year and previous years ultra sounds never detected any benign masses. I get Ultra sound because my Mother had a lumpectomy and radiation at age 65. She is fine today. I am 51, healthy no otter medical issues.

Brief Answer:
follow up ultrasound after 3 months

Detailed Answer:
Hello, there is no need to have any other investigation and just get a repeat ultrasound done after 3 months.
If the size remains almost same then yearly follow up will suffice but in case size increases then you should get the lumps removed surgically.
All the best.

Ok than you suggest ultra sound and not MRI ? Would MRI be more accurate and necessary? Or is ultra sound prudent? Is it normal for these benign masses to occur in a year? Can these benign very small masses resolve? And if they should increase are you saying have them removed as they can not remain benign they can change?

Detailed Answer:
Benign masses can occur in few months time especially of this small size.
But since you have family history so you need to have a regular follow up and ultrasound is good in that manner because it has no radiation exposure and minimal cost
If at all it increases in size then only you need MRI or PET Scan.
Mostly these masses don't resolve on themselves and thus need further follow up.
All the best.

So if they should increase in size in 3 months , but are still benign if they increase, your suggesting MRI before surgical removal? I am not concerned with cost, MRI has no radiation. What are reasons these benign masses occur.?

Detailed Answer:
Most common reason for these and lymphatic involvementasses is estrogen excess or increased number of estrogen receptors in breast tissue which are genetically determined.
Yes MRI is still important because It will tell about the vascular involvement and exact dimensions.
Right now we need to see the behavior of the mass eventually.
