Is Cardiac Ablation Safe In A Person With 20% Ejection Fraction?

Question: I have been told that I have a E.F. of 20 percent. I now have ICD Defibrillator in. But my heart after two sessons of shock therapy is still out of rythm. What now. They were talking about an ablation. Is that safe.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Welcome on HCM!

Regarding your concern, I would like to explain that cardiac ablation is performed for supraventricular as well as ventricular arrhythmias.

In your case, facing you are suffering from a low EF (ejection fraction) cardiomyopathy cardiac ablation would be helpful in treating possible supraventricular arrhythmias, which could deteriorate a currently controlled heart failure and also confuse ICD functioning.

From the other side, a successful cardiac ablation could properly address an arrhythmogenic ventricular focus, by decreasing that way frequently occurring ventricular arrhythmias (such as ventricular tachycardia, etc). This could lead to less frequently ICD shocks, less uncomfortable feelings to the patient and a longer life of ICD battery.

When performed by experienced expert hands, ablation is quite safe. It may also be repeated when necessary in such a safe way.

Hope that the recommended ablation will control your current arrhythmia and lead to a more comfortable and productive daily life.

Wishing all the best for the New Year!

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri
