Is Blood Pressure Of 120/60 A Cause For Concern In An Elderly Person?

default
Posted on Wed, 28 Sep 2016
Question: My father is 89. He recently broke his femur and therefore he is bed-bound . He is not malnourished but his weight is on the lower side.
Current medication: He is taking tablets to reduce his BP his BP is 120/60 and anticoagulant (not heparin)
His K is somewhat low 3.3
He has fluid in his chest (approx 150 ml)
His doctor prescribed additional medication ; diuretics spironolactone and frusemide + b blocker and K tablets.
I am concerned that his his BP tablets were not reduced - further drop in BP? Risk to his heart due to possible changes in electrolytes and drugs interactions.

Brief Answer:
Need to reduce dose of BP medication.

Detailed Answer:
HI

Greetings from Dr.Divakara.P
Thanks for posting your query.

Well see his blood pressure is 120/80 ( normal ) because of the BP medication and hence there is no need to worry that the BP may fall further . However for his age a BP of 150/90 is acceptable and hence there is a scope for dose reduction especially in beta blocker . Kindly discuss this with your doctor .

I am not very much worried about the drug interactions as these drugs can be ( and are ) used together. But yes electrolyte imbalance especially Sodium and potassium can happen and hence need to be checked every 2 weeks for first 2 months.

Hope this information was useful to you.
Any clarifications feel free to ask.

Regards.
