Question: I am diabetic and take Janumet 500mg once daily, my HBA1C is 5.7 , glucose fasting is 116, Trigliceride level is 259 , cholesterol 171, HDL 37, LDL - 92, Chol/ HDL - 4.6 , Very Low Density Lipoprotein is 51.8. I had a piles problem which was cured with homeopathy. Occasionally i drink alcohol but don't smoke. MEAN PLASMA GLUCOSE IS 116, Diabetes is hereditary.

Please suggest whether i need to take medicine or change in life style will do.

Brief Answer:
You can reduce number of Medicine.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for your question.

After going through your question, I can understand your concern.

You have very well controlled blood glucose levels.

I would like to advise -

- You should not stop medicines for diabetes completely.

- You can reduce your number of Medicines:
You are currently taking Tab Janumet (Which contains Sitagliptin 50mg & Metformin 500 mg).
You can stop Sitagliptin and increase the dose of Metformin to 1500 mg per day in divided doses.

- Continue exercise.

- Follow diabetic diet : Better to consult near by dietitian who can plan diet for you depending upon your height, weight, BMI & food habits.

- Recheck your blood sugar levels (Fasting & Postprandial) after 4 to 6 weeks, accordingly further reduction in dose of Metformin can be considered.

- Though your Lipid Profile is within acceptable limits, I will recommend you to take statin (Lipid lowering medicine like Atorvastatin or Rosuvastatin) in minimal dose.

You should discuss all this with your treating doctor.

Hope I have answered your question.

Dr Abhay Mali.
