Is Anesthesia Advisable While Having Cardiomyopathy?
Question: I was in the OR to have a hiatal hernia repair when they had difficulty inserting the tube for anesthesia . I was told I had a massive bronchial spasm, and was without oxygen for a minute or so. I have cardiomyopathy and had a stress heart episode. When I awoke I was in the ICU on a ventilator After 2 days I was transferred to the cardiac care unit for 5 days. Is it safe for me to have surgery with general anesthesia ? If so what should I ask the doctors ?

I read your question and i understand your concern. With age of 73 and associated heart problems and recent bronchospasm in OR room, i am afraid general anesthesia is not fit for you and this hiatal hernia should be managed conservatively if possible. If necessary to get fixed, i would suggest minimal invasive procedures and expert anesthesiologists at your bed side to prevent any complication or at least lessen it as you were lucky this time and any such incident again can lead to permanent damage and may even fry your kidneys and other body organs.
Talk options with your surgeon and ask if they can do any thing minimal invasive to correct it or is it even necessary to operate or can some conservative options work for you?
