Is An Elevated Platelet Count Dangerous For My Pregnancy?

default
Posted on Wed, 18 Sep 2019
Question: Hello. I am 31 years old and have conceived twins via IVF after a year of fertility treatment and injections.
I am currently 12weeks and 6 days pregnant and have an elevated platelet count of 606. My gynaecologist has asked me to consult a haematologist to find out why.
What are the possibilities? Is it dangerous for my pregnancy?

Brief Answer:
Nothing to worry about platelets.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, dear

I have gone through your question. I can understand your concern.

Your platelets count is slightly high. But nothing to worry about that. It can be due to pregnancy or some infection. No treatment for high platelets count is required.

But your total wbc count is neutrophil count is also high. That can also be due normal variations in pregnancy or some infection. If you have fever or any sign of infection then go for C reactive protein test. It will give you exact idea whether you have any infection or not. If it is positive then you have infection and you need antibiotics treatment.

Consult your doctor and plan accordingly.

Nothing to worry about platelets.

Hope I have answered your question. If you have any doubts then feel free to ask me. I will be happy to answer. Wish you a very good health.

I do not have a urinary infection. Let us assume that I do not have an infection what else could it be?

I am very worried as the haematologist I have been referred to is also an oncologist.

Nothing to worry if you don't have any infection

Hi, dear

I can understand your concern.

If you don't have any infection then nothing to worry. Your platelets count is not significant. Slight high count is common in pregnancy. In my opinion no need to consult any hematologist for your platelets count.

Hello doctor!
I went to the Heamo- Oncologist and he initially asked me to get some tests to rule out any clotting problems. I got them done and went to him and he said there wasn’t anything major(Attaching reports)
He then proceeded to tell me to get 2 other tests - the PCR for BCR ABL(Major) quantitative and the PCR for JAK2 mutation analysis because of my elevated platelet count.
Will get the reports for this after a week. As you know I’m already 13 weeks pregnant with twins after IVF and from what I have understood these are cancer tests. Is there something majorly wrong with me? Do I have cancer?
My test results were perfect before IVF in September last year. I’m extremely worried. What is your opinion?

Hello Doctor!
Is it possible that I had an underlying platelet problem all these years and it was never detected until I got pregnant.
If I am detected with something like essential thrombocytosis will I be able to carry on the pregnancy.
Or could I have had the JAK mutation or cancer all along and it just never got detected.
Im really worried doctor because I have conceived after a lot of problems and now I’m very confused what to do. What should my next steps be.
Please help me!

Brief Answer:
In my opinion nothing to worry.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, dear
I have gone through your question. I can understand your concern.

In my opinion there is nothing to worry. Nothing to worry about essential thrombocytosis. It is just reactive thrombocytosis which is normal and it should be ignored. Still if you want to go for other blood tests then it is your choice. In my opinion nothing to worry. It is normal variation and just ignore it. No any test is required.

Hope I have answered your question. If you have any doubts then feel free to ask me. I will be happy to answer.
Wish you a very good health.

Doctor was going through some old reports and saw that in December 2016 I had a high platelet count of 522.
Another CBC report in August 2017 shows a normal platelet count of 420.
And now my platelet count is 606 as you know it. Why this fluctuation of platelets.
If I had cancer or leukaemia would it have been detected by now.
Also if I have essential thrombocytosis will I be able to continue the pregnancy?
Please shed some light on the matter

Doctor according to a latest CBC my TLC ( Blood flow cytometry) is 13560
Along with the high platelets and a neutrophil count of 10576 is this indicative of any problems that the heamo- oncologist feels I have.
I know I’m repeating my questions but I’m very worried doctor and I am having sleepless nights because of the same.
Two days ago I was also detected with a throat strep infection and things seem to be getting worse.
Do I have any kind of leukaemia based on these numbers?

Brief Answer:
As I told earlier no need to worry about leukemia.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

Your high total count and high platelets count is due to infection. You should take antibiotics treatment for that. No need to worry about leukemia.

Wish you a very good health.
