Thankyou for asking here .
Dear I need to know more about the medical history. As these antibiotics can be given for urine infection. But wether these antibiotics are really sensitive to undergoing infection. To find out that getting urine culture done would help to rule out infecting organism and the antibiotics sensitive to that particular organism.

I need to ask more about past medical history if she has any? Like any other medical condition for example, D.M, HTN, heart disease or any other medicines taken before?

I'm sorry, I don't know what D.M or HTN is. She is a breast cancer survivor of over 10 years, she takes medicine for high BP and Cholesterol, she takes a pill for mild cognitive impairment, and she takes supplements every day: vitamins B12, C, D3, E, Glucosamine Chondroitin, and Ginko Biloba. I had her urine cultured about a month ago and it came back fine. She also is stage 4 kidney disease. ShE has not felt good for over a month, saying her belly doesn't feel good. No vomiting or diarrhea, some nausea, big loss in appetite. Does not feel like doing anything. And getting weaker, barely picking up feet to walk. She was on amoxicillin last Aug (?) when I took her to ER. Thinking she had a stroke, she couldn't walk unless I moved her legs for her. It was UTI. After a 4 day stay, we have been alternating between amoxicillin and cipro ever since. Because her PPO doesn't want to give referal to specialist, I don't know what to do. Does she need infectious disease Dr?

Brief Answer:
Antibiotics are used as prophylatic medicines.

Detailed Answer:
Thankyou so much for detailed history.
I asked about D.M (Diabetes Mellitus) and HTN ((Hypertention ...high B.P) because these two factors and increased age may cause urine problems.
From her detailed history I came to the conclusion that these antibiotics are given for prophylaxis purpose( prevention from infection). These antibiotics can be given on and off for bed ridden and weak patients who are prone to recurrent urine infection due to static condition and accumulation of bacteria.

Coming to the point for reffering to Infectious disease doctor ,I would like to tell that one should consult infectious disease doctor in case patient has high grade fever with undergoing condition which is not manageable with simple antibiotics and infection is worsening with unknown cause.

So trust your treating doctor and follow accordingly. You may ask about stopping these antibiotics from treating doctor once the course is completed.

Hope I answered your query. Please do not hesitate to ask further if I need to clarify more.

Best regards,
Dr.Maheshwari

Thank you so much. You have put my mind at ease to some degree. I'm still concerned as to why she seems to have worse upset stomache, less appetite, and no desire to do anything when she is on the cipro. Could she be allergic to it? What should I look for?

Brief Answer:
It is not allergy due to tab.cipro.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thankyou for asking again.
Stomach upset can be one of the side effect of cipro. If it continues you may stop tab.cipro after discussing with treating doctor. Also less appetite and other symptoms could be because of prolonged bed ridden situation.

I Would suggest to give her light and soft food with small and frequent meals. And taking physiotherapy consultation may also help to support for walking and decrease bodyache.

I dont think so she is allergic to cipro,if it was allegy then the symptoms would have been like rashes, itching, breathlessness etc

Hope my answer clarified you more.
Best regards,
Dr.Maheshwari
