Question: My wife is planning to abort. Her last period was on feb 21st. She checked her beta HCG levels and found it to be as 19. Can you please suggest the required course of action so that the impact will be minimal in future. We are based out of Hyderabad, India

Brief Answer: I feel wait for 1 week to get a scan. Detailed Answer: Hi XXXX Thank you for choosing Healthcaremagic. I can understand your concerns, as your wife has just missed her periods so its a very early pregnancy, as the Beta-HCG is also very less to identify the location of pregnancy. I personally feel you can wait for another week, get a scan done to localize the exact position of pregnancy and gestational age. Depending on the scan findings you can decide if you want medical or surgical abortion. Medical abortion (by taking pills) can be done upto 9weeks of pregnancy with high success rate. With such a less Beta-HCG value it will be very difficult for the scan to find out the location of pregnancy. Rarely there could be chances of ECTOPIC pregnancy, hence a scan is very very important to localize the pregnancy before abortion is planned.
