Question: I had an ultrasound that said I had a small right inguinal hernia. I have no bulge. Is this a sports hernia or an actual inguinal hernia with no bulge.

Brief Answer:
Sports hernia if there is pain and related activities that caused it.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

Noted the history.
Inguinal hernia is of two types, one is an Indirect type in which the passage is through the natural pathway of the tract through which the testicle descends down.
Direct hernia means the wall above the pubic bone gets lax and thus one gets a hernia.
Sports hernia is sort of a direct hernia but it is painful and occurs secondary to sports or activities that needs sudden change of direction and so on. If there is pain then only it is called sports hernia which in itself can get transformed into a regular direct hernia.
Small hernia will be evident clinically at a later date.

I hope this simplifies the problem.

I do not have the image but the report the Dr. Showed me said small right inguinal hernia. So is that a hernia or sports hernia. His notes said pt has right inguinal hernia to be repaired and plan for sports hernia. Again no bulge. So is it a hernia or sports hernia?

His physical exam notes also said small right inguinal hernia. Ultrasound reviewed.

Thanks

Brief Answer:
Looks to be a direct inguinal hernia.

Detailed Answer:
Okay, thanks for your feedback.
Either sports or not, it is hernia and since your Doctor has examined you and confirmed the hernia by ultrasound it needs surgical correction.
As said above the sports hernia usually also have a history of pain and related activities.
Plan for sports hernia means this looks to be a direct type of Inguinal hernia hence to be treated as sports hernia.
Bulge may be small and unnoticeable, sometimes the fat does not show an evident bulge.

I hope this clears your doubt.
