Is A Biopsy Followed By A Lumpectomy Required To Confirm A Breast Lump?
Question: Is it standard to do first a biopsy on a breast lump and do a lumpectomy on a separate occasion? Or can they be done at the same time?

So it is mandatory to first confirm the tumor by either a biopsy or FNAC and then to proceed for the definite surgery(lumpectomy). It is because rarely, sometimes there is no tumor and the lump is a benign one, so unnecessary surgery an be avoided.

but it has been done on me before all in one procedure. This breast has had 5 or 6 biopsies in the last 10-12 years. Twice the results showed calcium deposits; the other times nothing. The breast has been leaking since about 2006. Most were needle biopsies; two were incision biopsies. On one of the incision biopsies, the drs removed the lump-mostly on a 'since we were in there' basis. in one of the later mammograms, there were supposedly 4 papilloma tumors. I opted to leave them alone because research showed that they has a 90% chance of being benign. I can't get odds that good just driving on XXXXXXX roads. Research also shows 80% odds of a lump being benign. I want to know A. why the breast continues to leak, B. what happened to the 4 papillomas C. if one dr took the lump out just because it was there and shouldn't be, why can't another doctor do that. I had a hysterectomy in the 70's and they took my appendix while they were there to avoid making an incision in the same area again. It was a healthy appendix.

But it is really difficult to comment , what was going in the mind of your doctor who performed so many biopsies. As biopsy is only indicated if a lesion is atleast BIRADS 3 or above in mammogram, rest can be left as such. In your case, certainly if the suspicion of cancer is high and you have insurance issues, one stage procedure can be tailored for you.
