Is A BP Reading Of 90/60 A Cause For Concern?

default
Posted on Wed, 24 Aug 2016
Question: Blood pressure Q: female, age 68, height 5.5, weight 170, meds - losartan, metoprolol, janumet, glimiperide, levothyroxin, spironolactone, atorvastatin, lo dose aspirin - my BP this morning at Dr's office was 103/67. Last month at Dr's office it was 120/70. ECG in May had abnormal, low volume reading and last month another ECG was abnormal in the same area. In both cases, Dr said 'not to worry.' Isn't 103 BP number a bit low?

Brief Answer:
lower limit is 90/60,treat only if symptoms present or if very low

Detailed Answer:
Hi, thanks for using healthcare magic

It is understandable to be concerned but it is only an issue if you are having symptoms of low blood pressure.

The lower limit of blood pressure is 90/60 which is lower than the readings above however some persons may have readings higher than this and have symptoms because their bodies cannot tolerate these levels.

On the other hand, some persons can have blood pressure readings slightly less than 90/60 and it is normal for them and they have no symptoms at all and do not require any treatment

If you are having symptoms such as dizziness, shortness of breath, confusion, nausea, fatigue, clammy then treatment is needed.
This would normally involve adjustment of blood pressure medication.
Treatment is also indicated if a person's blood pressure is too low and could result in organ damage.

If you are not having any symptoms that may be related to low blood pressure then no treatment is needed

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
