Is Prednisone Effective In Treating Vestibular Neuritis?

default
Posted on Fri, 5 Aug 2016
Question: Hi! :-)
I have been disgnosed with vestibular neurutitis by an ear doctor. But he was not sure. Only think its that because of the other tests was negative. My only symptom is dizziness. Have had it in 3-4 days. Only when im walking or in movement. Not when im sitting or lying. Im a semi pro cyclist, and its also very bad when i try to ride. Ear doctor suggested high dose of presnisone. But i have read alot of places on the internet that there isent really any suffient evidence for its working or speeding the healing up. So if thats the case i really dont want to take the presnisone because of all the side effects. But unsure if it helps? What would you suggest.
Best regards XXXX

Brief Answer:
Recovers Spontaneously

Detailed Answer:
Hello Sir

Thanks for relying on Healthcaremagic

I have gone through your query and concerns.

Steroids like prednisone seem to improve the condition only if administered within 2 to 3 days of symptom onset.

After few days of symptoms onset,if administered will not improve the outcome as you read.

So I would suggest you to consider vestibular rehabilitation therapy in which specially designed exercises will be taught by physical therapist or occupational therapist.I strongly believe this will help you.

Also try to avoid vestibular suppressants which may delay the recovery

Hope this helps you

Further queries are welcome

Take care

Hi Dr. Senduran Thanks for the answer.

Its 3 days ago today, so i guess it wouldent make sense to take them now.

You mention vestibular suppressants, that i should avoid them. But what are they?

2 quick questions, whats the normal time frame before its gets better?
And the reason for it, could it in any way be related to i use earplugs every night?
The doctor looked in my ears, and they looked fine.
But could it be related?
Or is it not the case.

Brief Answer:
Yes,prednisone not needed in my opinion too

Detailed Answer:
Hello again

Thanks for writing back

The symptoms usually subsides in 2 to 3 weeks when the vestibular apparatus compensates to the imbalance.

Vestibular suppressants are drugs that commonly belong to antihistamine(like meclizine, dimenhydrinate, cinnarazine), benzodiazepines (like clonazepam, lorazepam) and anticholinergic (like amitriptyline, scopolamine) which helps treat the symptoms. But after few days of symptoms vestibular system tries to compensate with the balance, these drugs may put your vestibule sleep and compensation occurs late and not adequate. So recovery can occur late more than 2 to 3 weeks.

Not related..There's no relation between keeping earplug during sleep at night and your dizziness

Hope this answered your query

Take care

Thanks alot for your very detailed answer!
Very helpfull indeeed. :-)
I can see i have one more follow up question, so i guess i might as well ask for a last thing.
You are talking about compesation accurs.
Could i still train and ride my bike? If i feel i can control it and take it easy. Or is balance completely comprimised?
I tried riding a bit, and its doable although i can feel i have 2 be very carefull.

Brief Answer:
Yeah need to be careful for next few days

Detailed Answer:
Hello again

Thanks for your feedback

Balance is not completely compromised rather is mildly affected.I advise you to avoid automobile events i.e bike ride for next 2-3 days, though you keep encouraging to do your routine physical activity in a tolerable pace which causes compensation to occur fast. You can then gradually train and ride the bike with confidence. As I said earlier a physical therapist can help in a better way to hasten your recovery.

Hope I was helpful
