Question: If one regularly has blood sugar levels between 140-200 mg/dL 2 hours after meals (or at other times between meals), but one has a recent hemoglobin A1C lab result of 5.5, is this considered prediabetes or no?

Brief Answer:
its in normal range

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
Usually hba1c range is considered normal as in non diabetic if its less than 5.9.
As your report is 5.5 it is normal range.
Post prandial blood sugar is considered normal if less than 140. But it is done after exactly 2hrs after eating 75gm of sugar. If it is done in these conditions then only the test results are reliable.
So i guess your Hba1c values can be trusted rather than your post meal sugar value.
If you want to do post prandial one, then after doing fasting sugar value eat 75gm of sugar and do ppbs exactly after 2 hours. I am sure it will be below 140mg/dl.
Hba1c values do not change fast and show a more stable blood sugar levels so according to them your is non diabetic range and can be called as normal value.
So its not prediabetic but its normal or non diabetic.
I hope i have answered your query well. if you have any more query kindly write back to me will be happy to answer them.
Thank you

Thank you very much Dr. Sonawane. I think I got my hba1c in September.

So healthy blood ppbs should ideally be between 100-140 mg/dL, is that correct?

What is the healthy waking blood sugar range after a night w/o eating?

Brief Answer:
yes right. it should be below 100mg/dl

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for following up with me.
Morning blood sugar after waking up and empty stomach is called as fasting blood sugar (FBS). It is done ideally after 8 -10 hrs gap of having dinner. If it is less than 100 mg/dl then its non diabetic. Between 100- 125 is prediabetic. Above 126 is diabetic.
Now after consuming 75 grams of sugar you wait for 2hrs then repeat blood sugar which is post prandial blood sugar (PPBS). It should be less than 140 to be called as non diabetic. In between 140 and 200 is prediabetic. More than 200 is diabetic.
Hba1c usually takes a month to change values. It won't change drastically. So even if its done in September it still can be trusted as it must have changed by 0.2 or 0.3.
So I guess i have cleared your doubt about blood sugars. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.
Thank you
