Question: P24 antigen hiv test done at 40day of exposure how reliable is it?
doctor
Answered by Dr. Indu Kumar (50 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
It is not very reliable if done on 40th day of exposure.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

P24 antigen test can detect the P24 protein on average 10 to 14 days after infection with HIV.

One drawback of this test is that levels of the P24 protein peak at around three to four weeks after exposure to HIV and are usually not detectable after five to six weeks (and sometimes even earlier).
As your test is done on 40th day of exposure, it is not very reliable.

You can go for antibody test, if these tests are negative then there is nothing to be worried about. You may repeat the test after 3 months for confirmation.

Get well soon.
Hope I have answered your question.

Thank you so much dr for your clear Answer. What I actually did is Ab/ag p24 test for hiv, can trust this at 40 days of exposure because it was negative.

Most likely you are safe.

Hello,

Most likely you are safe but you should repeat the antibody test after 3 months due to variation in disease progression. Repeat test after 3 months will confirm you.

Thanks once more dr, am sorry for asking you again. I had a lot of symptoms after 8days of exposure beginning with sore throat, inflammation of the neck head and armpit and tiredness ,fatigue and headache but no fever. I also haddiarrhea for 5weeks and am still having it uptill now. My symptoms have lasted for 10 weeks now. My questions are
(1) can the symptoms of hiv last for 10weeks
(2) With all these symptoms in you own opinion how many percent chance do I have that this negative test at 40days will remain negative at 12weeks.
Please tell me the truth because i like how you answer questions.

Brief Answer:
HIV is unlikely in your case.

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Sorry for replying late.
Presentation of initial symptoms of AIDS varies very much.
Only way to confirm HIV infection is through tests.

Most people who are infected with HIV experience a short,flu-like illness that occurs two to six weeks after infection. This is called as seroconversion illness.Symptoms usually last one to two weeks but it can be longer.

One main factor during flu like illness is fever. You don't have fever, this is in your favour.
Diarrhea is mainly found in chronic illness, this is also in your favour.
Most likely your symptoms are due to some other reasons.

In your case, symptoms are unlikely to persist for 10 weeks. However,as we discussed earlier,it varies with person to person.

You have undergone fourth generation tests and it includes both antigen and antibody tests.I am almost fully sure that you are not suffering from HIV illness.
However, you need follow up test after 3 months for confirmation.
I am sure your tests will be negative even after 12 weeks.

Hope I have answered your question.

I have gone to general test but dr said that he cannot prescribe any medicine for me because no sickness have been found but I am dieing gradually very day. Please Dr is there any medicine you know that can be of help?

Answered by Dr. Indu Kumar (15 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
We should wait for the results.

Detailed Answer:
Hello

We should wait patiently till results come.We should expect good results.

Diarrhea may be due to many reasons. This need proper evaluation. It may be due to anxiety.Empirically you take antimotility drugs for short duration like tablet loperamide.
Colonoscopy can be done for better evaluation.
For pain you can take NSAIDS like tablet Piroxicam SOS.

Please let me know your final reports.

Get well soon.
Hope I have answered your question.
