Is Oxandrolone Advisable During Pregnancy?

default
Posted on Tue, 28 Jun 2016
Question: I was taking 10mgs of anavar for about 17 days. I felt i had conceived and therefore immediately ceased taking the anavar. 12 days later I missed my period and had a positive pregnancy test. I am now 9 weeks pregnant. Dating scan appeared normal.
My question is, are there any risks to the baby from having taken anavar, even though I stopped the night i feel i conceived? And should i be concerned the baby and possible defects?
Thank you

Brief Answer:
its a category x drug and not advisable, but risk is less in your case

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for the query to HCM,
Oxandrolone ( ANAVAR) has been assigned to pregnancy category X by the FDA. Anabolic steroid use, particularly during the first trimester of pregnancy, may cause virilization of the external genitalia of the female fetus. There are no controlled data in human pregnancy. Oxandrolone use is considered contraindicated during pregnancy.
So as the dating scan is normal, one has to go through the repeat scan at 13 weeks and then 18 weeks level 2 anomaly scan where any birth defect if would have arisen out of the dosing can be duly identified with regards to virilization of female child.
Though you have taken it for just 17 days and hence the levels of androgens would not have risen so high to affect the child ideally as such virilizing effects are seen in foetuses more commonly if the drug is continue for more than a month or so into pregnancy.
Keep taking routine pregnancy medication and get ultrasound as and when advised to look for genital defects especially.

Use of anavar of approximately one month into pregnancy may increase risk of virilization of external female genitalia...if the fetus is male, are there any risks?

Detailed Answer:
As these are anabolic steroids, they shall not affect the make foetus at all. So ultrasound LEVEL 2 scan would be a must in your case at 18-20 weeks anyhow.
