As I mentioned the response to chemotherapeutic agents has a number of determinants. They are patient related factors like degree of extent and spread. If it has spread extensively, the requisite dose might not be a permissible one thus leading to failure of response.
I would add an extra note. In case of a person where metastasis has already occurred, the ultimate fate is not far, irrespective of what you do. In such a scenario, rather than trying to do whatever you can, it might be better to stop trying to prolong life. Rather you should concentrate on the quality of life he can get in the short duration that he has.

He was initially a stage 3, just recently developed sum mets so he does not have spread all over . Does this make diffetence?

Iam sorry to say that it does not really make a difference. If metastasis has occurred it is stage 4. Once metastasis has occurred, the cells can be out there anywhere. Even if the chemotherapeutic agents manage to kill 99.99% of the cells, the remaining would again make a comeback. The cells from the original lump or from the metastasis may invade a capillary and enter the blood stream going anywhere it likes.
I do not mean to sound pessimistic. But it is important to concentrate on the quality of life. And you need to be realistic about the expectations.
