Posted on Sat, 5 Nov 2016
Question: Thank you. I am a recovering alcoholic ( 23 years , never relapsed, active program of recovery) . I am being treted for vertigo , which I've had for 27 years and the ENT dr. would like to put me on Klonopin. He said it would also help with my insomnia and anxiety, which I am also being treated for. What's your thought?

Brief Answer:
You have several options. A small dose of Klonopin shouldn't be harmful

Detailed Answer:
Hi there,

Your ENT doctor is exactly right - Klonopin will help you sleep, as well as help your anxiety. However, I do not know the effectiveness of Klonopin on vertigo - I would imagine that Klonopin would be very effective if your vetrigo was caused by anxiety and insomnia (which is possible, and common), however, this is something you are going to have to ask your ENT doctor. There are not many treatments for vertigo. The main treatment is to control your other co-morbid conditions such as anxiety and insomnia, and hopefully the vertigo will improvement.

What is your concern with starting Klonopin?

Are you not getting good control of your anxiety and insomnia with your current regimen? Is there room to go up on your current medication dosages?

Anxiety is best treated with cognitive-behavioral therapy. It is the most well-studied psychological treatment; it is also effective for people with other co-morbid conditions such as insomnia and depression. It is the treatment of choice when available. You may benefit from seeking a psychologist or insomnia doctor.

On the other hand, cymbalta and effexor are are some of the best medications for anxiety. You may want to ask your doctor if you can go up on the dosage.

Ambien is a great sleep medication especially for the younger people. However, as we age, the side effects become more apparent such as sleepwalking, psychosis, and abnormal behaviors. Trazodone is also another very effective sleep medication. I would highly recommend it.

Another medication for insomnia and anxiety is Hydroxyzine (also known as Vistaril or Atarax). It is a stronger version of Benadryl essentially. I would also highly recommend it. It will help you sleep, as well as relieve anxiety.

Quetiapine (also know as Seroquel) is another very effective medication for sleep and anxiety. You can also try buspirone (Also known as BuSpar).

Ultimately, if I were you, I would take the recommendations from the ENT doctor as he or she is the expert in that field. You can try the Klonopin for a couple of days to see if you get a good relief as living with vertigo is a very poor quality ofYou have several options. A small dose of Klonopin shouldn't be harmfullife. Unfortunately, there is a small addiction potential with Klonopin. The other route is to try to get better control of your anxiety and insomnia, as well as your other medical problems to see if this will help control your vertigo. Trying the Klonopin in a very small dose dose will most likely have no effect on your prior history of alcoholism. However, benzodiazepines such as Klonopin are essentially alcohol in a pill form, but you should remember that you are 23 years old and at a different place in your life.

Thank you for your response. To clarify, I am 23 years in recovery from alcoholism, not 23 years old. ( (i am 62 yrs old).
Would the contraindication be that the benzo could cause a relaspse in drinking or that I could be at greater potential for abusing the benzo?

Brief Answer:
Small chance of benzo addiction

Detailed Answer:
Hi there

Sorry I meant to say 23 years older.

The contraindication would be that you have a small chance of becoming addicted and depend on benzos just like you were for alcohol. The chance is small, but needs to be considered and highly discussed due to your history of alcoholism. Ultimately, every alternative should be considered.
