Is Hydroxychloroquin An Effective Medication For LPP Disease?
Question: Hi doctor...this is in continuation to our earlier discussion of LPP disease. You have recommended to use Hydroxycloroquin under doctor's supervision to to stop spread of this skin pigmentation. My question is: is it safe to use this medicine? Also do you think this pigmentation is due to any kind of fungus?

Hi.
Hydroxychloroquin is safe. However, it is recommended to do baseline liver function tests and ophthalmology checkup before starting hydroxychloroquin. These need to be repeated 6 monthly as hydroxychloroqion can rarely have side effects like liver toxicity and side effects related to visual acuity and field of vision. However these are not common and monitoring at 6 monthly interval is a good precaution.
I dont think this pigmentation is related to fungal infection.

The dosage that you have suggested is 200 mg Hydroxychloroquin pills twice daily, morning and evening. So, for how many days I should take it?
Also, I'm using Momate cream daily night for last 15days as you suggested. For how long this need to be continued?

Hydroquinone is one of the treatment options. However, topical steroid i.e mometasone furoate is preferred option for treatment of LPP. Moreover, hydroquinone can have side effects like irritation and can cause exogenous ochronosis as a side effect of long term use.
