Is HIV Transmission Possible Through Unprotected Oral Sex?

default
Posted on Mon, 19 Dec 2016
Question: Hello,
I am a homossexual male from Brazil.
About four months ago I had passive unprotected oral sex with an male prostitute; there was no Anal sex. Since I considered that it was a risky behavior I went to a free health clinic and started PEP with about eighteen hours after the exposure. I took the medication for the 30 days (Tenofovir (TDF) + Lamivudina (3TC) + Atazanavir/ritonavir (ATV/r)). After 45 days of the exposure I took a blood test and the result was negative. in the beginning of november I had sex again, but it was safe. 6 days ago i had a sore throat with swelling of the amigdalas and some pus, and took antibiotics (Penicillin G Benzathine Injection) and corticosteroids (prednisone pills and Dexamethasone injection). The throat got better but today I felt weak and had some pain in my body, my back normally has some pimples but many more appeared and I'm not sure if it is only more pimples or rash related to accute infection. I had no fever yet. I have OCD and I may be worrying excessively but I am really anxious. Could those marks be a rash?
Thanks.

Brief Answer:
You are absolutely safe and risk free from HIV.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXX,

Welcome to HCM.

The risk of getting HIV from unprotected oral sex is very less and you also started PEP within 72 hours then you need not to worry at all about HIV. Along with your test result is also negative after 45 days then calm down as the risk in your case is nil.

The symptoms you have might be due to common viral illness and rash can be due to skin allergy not related to HIV. Consult your doctor to isolate the cause and follow treatment regime as per advice. Don't get anxious or tensed and move ahead in life.

Thank You

Thank you for your attention,

Just one more question:

Yesterday I got worse and I went to the ER and took a blood test:

Name result reference:

C-reactive protein - 11,2 mg/dl 0 -6
leukocytes 14,990 /mm3 5,000 - 10,000
segmented neutrophils 78% (11,692) 40% - 75%
banded neutrophils 1% (150) 0% - 5%
basophils 0% 0% - 1%
eosinophils 1% (150) 0% - 5%
Lymphocyte 14% (2098) 20% - 40%
Monocyte 6% (900) 2% - 8%

I also took an X-ray of my facial sinuses that indicated some sinusites

Do the alterations in the white blood cells reffer to bacteria infection or could it be some kind of virus? Do te symptoms I described refer to bacteria infection or could it be something else involved.

Thanks for your attention.

Brief Answer:
It is related to bacterial infection.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXX,

Welcome back and thanks for follow-up.

Alteration in white cell count or high C-reactive protein is due to bacterial infection like URTI or inflammation but not related to any virus so allay the fear or anxiety related to HIV and live your life normally as you are absolutely safe from HIV.
