Is HIV Antibody Detecting Tests Done 3 Months After Exposure Conclusive?

default
Posted on Mon, 22 Dec 2014
Question: I have a 3 part question I was hoping you can answer

1) In February 2014, I had unprotected(vaginal) sex with my Ex girlfriend. I was tested for HIV(antibody) 3 times since that point. 5 months past possible exposure, 7 months and 8 months. All tests came back Negative. In July (5 months past exposure, I was shocked electrically (much like a taser, high volts, low amps). After the Shock I had a loss of appetite, constipation and weight loss. (all CBC, Ultrasound etc) came back normal. My question is, is after 8 months my test conclusive? Can I put it behind me? Could the shock have effected the outcome of my results?

2) How come on some websites it says a conclusive HIV test is 3 months, while others say 6?

3) Is it true, the transmission rate from female to male is lower? (vaginal sex)

Brief Answer:
Result is conclusive. You are free from HIV.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to HCM.
Thanks for posting your query.

1. HIV Antibody detecting tests done 3 months after the high risk exposure is almost conclusive and reliable. Electric shock, you had, had nothing to do with HIV result out-come.
2.Only if you are on drugs which can suppress the immunity like steroids, cancer drugs, drugs received by organ recipients and ART as a post exposure prophylaxis can delay the formation of antibodies inside the body and extend the window period up to six months. Your results were non-reactive even 8 months after the high risk contact. So it is very much sure that you are free from HIV infection.
3. Yes, the transmission rate of HIV is comparably low with female to male during vaginal sex than with that of male to female due to the anatomic nature of female genitalia and also due to she was a recipiet for semen which is likely to be exposed for a longer period inside her body and inner aspect of her genitals.
I hope that I had cleared your doubts. If you have more questions, I am pleased to answer.

There is no way the shock could have weakened my immune system and killed the antibodies, making them undetectable?

Brief Answer:
Electric shock nothing to do with antibody formation

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome back.

Antibodies are formed inside the body against germs. Electric shock in no way interfere or affect the formation of antibodies against HIV in presence of infection.Your result is final. Not to have any doubts about that. Nothing to worry. You are free from HIV.

can you explain that to me? Many websites say that Electricity is known to reduce HIV infectivity.

Will that alter my HIV antibody test?

Brief Answer:
Electric shock after 5 months not interfere antibody formation.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to HCM back.

Thank you very much for sending an interesting study about which I was not having any idea previously.
But this is a hypothesis only. Not yet appeared in any regular text book or in approved sites.
Moreover in your case, there was an interval of 5 months between your high risk activity and electric shock. By that time HIV could establish an infection and antibodies would be produced if there is an infection and your tests would have revealed antibodies if there were.
As per their study HIV gets attenuated not interfere with the antibody production in any way.
That study indicated that electric shock is in a way good and made the organism get attenuated. So you must be happy instead of getting upset.

So even if the shock did stop the HIV the antibodies would still be produced enough that I would show? Am I still considered hiv negative ?

Detailed Answer:

If the shock altered the virus, my body would still create anti-bodies correct? I was tested about two weeks after the shock

Brief Answer:
Even virus get attenuated, continue to induce antibody production

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome back.

As per the study you had quoted, electric current make the virus to become low virulent, so that its infectious nature would come down.
But it would continue to immunologically active inside the body (as the antigens are persisting) and the body would react to these antigens and produce antibodies. This principle is being followed in most of the live vaccinations like small pox, oral polio, BCG etc the organism got attenuated and still it could induce immunity against the disease. So the negative test assures that you are HIV free.
