Is BP Reading Of 193/123 A Cause For Concern?

default
Posted on Tue, 27 Oct 2015
Question: I just read my blood pressure.. It is averaging 193/123 (4 readingsO.

I have diabetes and high blood pressure issues. I took an atenelol 50mg this morning and a Clonodine .1 about 15 minutes ago (after seeing those high readings).

This past year I had an ekg, echo and stress test on the treadmill which were all negative.

Should I be overall concern or can I wait until tomorrow to see a doctor.

Brief Answer:
You can wait for today if blood pressure comes down to normal with tablets.

Detailed Answer:
Hello Mr XXXXXXX

Welcome to health care magic,

I have read your query and understand the problem.

Blood pressure reading 193 systolic and 123 diastolic is considered very high which needs to be controlled immediately.

As you had taken atenolol 50 and clonidine immediately after getting a high reading, you should check your blood pressure after 1 or 2 hours.

If it comes down between 110 to 120 systolic and 70 to 80 diastolic then I would consider it as a normal or in desirable range. Then you can wait for today and no need to be worried.

But you will need to take regular anti-hypertensive medications to keep your blood pressure in desirable range (110 to 120 systolic and 70 to 80 diastolic) after taking complete medical history and clinical examination with some relevant tests like lipid profile, creatinine, EKG and 2D echo if it was done before 1 year by your treating physician.

Here,I would like to ask some more information,

What is average reading of your blood pressure routinely?
Have you undergone lipid profile or EKG recently?

You can continue your anti-diabetic medications simultaneously as prescribed by your doctor.

Overall,I would advise you to take this high readings seriously (but need not to get panicked) and to take appropriate anti-hypertensives regularly.

Your physician will know about it.You can consult him.

Hope this will help you.If you need any more clarification then I will be happy to answer that.

Regards,

Dr.Sandip Kabra

My blood pressure is usually routinely around 140/90 or 150/95.

My EKG was normal. I do not believe I had a lipid profile (I do not know what that is)?

Brief Answer:
See your doctor and start anti-hypertensive to controll BP.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for the quick follow-up.

Lipid profile is actually a blood screening tests to determine the lipid level in our blood such as cholesterol and triglycerides.

In person with hypertension,it needs to be checked periodically in order to decide further course of treatment.

Blood pressure around 150 systolic and around 95 diastolic is considered as a mild hypertension which should not be ignored.

I generally advise my patients to start with calcium channel blocker (amlodipine) or ACE inhibitors like enalapril with salt restricted diet and some life style modifications like regular exercises, avoid stressful life, avoid alcohol or smoking.

However, your anti-hypertensive medication will vary according to your physician's choice and will depend upon relevant investigations.

You should see your doctor who will know about it and can start appropriate medicines to keep your blood pressure under desirable range as I already explained.

Hope this will help you.
