Posted on Mon, 21 Apr 2014
Question: Hello doctor, I have a question about a test result. In the first trimester blood test I got a 1:2836 for downs syndrome and 1:10000 for other trisomies. The NT scan at 12 weeks was 1.5 mm and the nasal bone was present from 10 weeks onwards. My question is if it's ok not to do an amniocentesis. I'm 24 years old.

Brief Answer: Amniocentesis not indicated Detailed Answer: Hi Welcome to Healthcare-Magic Greetings of the day Dear Ms Amniocentesis is definitely not indicated I would explain you and assign you the reason. 1. The risk of trisomy depends on maternal age: Higher the age of mother, more the risk. Your age is only 24 years.Risk of having down syndrome or other trisomy is more after 35 years. Mothers in age group of 15- 29 years have risk of 1:1500 that means for every 1500 babies born to mothers in this age group , only one will have Trisomy. Your score is 1:2836 which is very much lower than the general population. So there is absolutely no reason to consider Trismy 2. NT test shows 1.5 mm. Anything more than 4 mm is significant. So Ultrasound is also very reassuring. Both these factors put together, possibility of Trisomy is ruled out. There is no reason for undergoing Amniocentesis and risking the uncomplicated pregnancy. Rest Be assured there is no cause for concern. Take Care Best Regards DR T Shobha Deepak
