Question: which drug is more effective in controlling hypertension Amlopidine or Lisinopril. If one has a prehypertension 140/80 which drug has the least side effects?

The treatment of prehypertension (140/80) starts with a calcium channel blocker such as Amlodipine or Nifedipine. Unfortunately, their use is associated with edema (swollen legs).

In such cases, treatment is continued with ACE-inhibitor such as Lisinopril. Usually, they are well tolerated. The most common side effect of them is dry coughing. If it occurs, other meds like ARB-inhibitors are recommended.

So, as you may see, treatment is based on:
- average blood pressure of the patient
- other health problems
- if the patient is developing side effects.
