I Went For A Jog/walk This Morning And Got A

Question: I went for a jog/walk this morning and got a very bad pain in my left side-upper hip area. It has not subsided and is pretty intense. It hurts to bend over, walk, pretty much everything. Is is likely my hip that is hurt or could it be something else? A few weeks ago I got the same type of pain while jogging-felt like a cramp more than anything but it pretty much went away.

Brief Answer:
Muscular strain is the possible cause of your pain- recommendations below

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to 'Ask A Doctor' service,

Pain in the upper hip area, especially after exercise, is generally related to a strain of soft tissues such as muscles, tendons or ligaments (these all cause similar symptoms).

The pain may reoccur if similar repeated trauma hurts the muscle as it may have happened in your case.

This can be very distressing due to intense pain but generally, it is self-limiting and should be better in a few days. Meanwhile, try to avoid jogging in the coming days or any other physical activity that may make it worse. You may use Ibuprofen 400mg every 8 hours after food to help with the pain.

A visit with a physiotherapist may be helpful to relax the hurting muscle and strengthen muscle groups to prevent similar episodes.

Any history of falls or major trauma and any neurological symptoms (weakness, numbness, tingling, etc) is important for us to know as other diagnoses should be considered in these cases.

I hope this answers your query.
I remain at your disposal in case further medical assistance is needed.
