I Wake Up A Few Hours After Going To Bed,

default
Posted on Sun, 16 Jun 2019
Question: I wake up a few hours after going to bed, with severe bowel cramping. Feels like they are going to explode! After awhile I have a couple of bowel movements which are softly formed. Then changes to watery diarrhea for several more times. The time line is for an hour and 1/2 or so. Finally I feel better and can go to sleep. This has happened only twice. Last night and not quite a week ago. First time I thought is was food poisoning... later I remembered that I was on a second round of antibiotics and 1 round of steroids for 2 teeth removal and implant procedure. I ask dentist at checkup if those would cause diarrhea and they said yes. Now I am off both of those and have had another episode ..

Brief Answer:
Stop Kefir and Yogurt

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Noted the history well and understood the concerns.
If you are continuing with Kefir, this itself can cause diarrhea as Kefir contains live bacteria and yeast.
Please stop Kefir and yogurt.
Maintain hydration and electrolyte balance.
Send the stool and blood for lab so that we can get an idea whether you need any medications or not.
Have normal diet.

I hope this answer helps you.
Please give feedback about improvement and lab reports.

With Regards.

I know antibiotics alter the gut bacteria.. what can I do to restore that? I usually don't take antibiotics when prescribed from the dentist as I don't like what they do to the gut. Also, the first episode I wasn't using the Kefir. I started that after the first episode; because I thought that would prevent another one.

Brief Answer:
As detailed below.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your feedback and understood the thoughts.
Some antibiotics like Amoxicillin can cause more disturbance to the balance of intestinal bacterial flora - which is usually restored by body's own mechanisms and so most of the people do not need any additional treatment.

Since your second episode occurred in spite of not being on antibiotics - indicates the need for proper clinical evaluation, examination and investigations to know the diagnosis. If the loose stool persists, I will recommend you see a doctor.

In the interim, drink fluids to remain hydrated. Try to identify the foods and beverages that might have caused this.

I hope this further clarifies.
