Question: I recently (mid Feb) completed chemotherapy & radiation. I am now on the aromatase inhibitor Anastrozole. I also take Lexapro, 2 cholesterol drugs. I have had normal liver enzymes all through treatments, and up to 4/17 when I visited my oncologist. Last week I developed severe nausea/diarrhea and a small amount of vomiting to where I spent 3 days in the hospital. Upon receiving my blood work back my AST had raised almost 100 point, ALP raised too, but ALT remained in the normal range. Is it possible for your AST and ALP to raise 100 pts each in a little over a week? I am a daily drinker but not to excess. Hospital determined I had a bacterial infection in my intestines. Thank you for your consideration and follow up.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,
Welcome to ask a doctor.
Thank you for your query.
I understand your concern.
Well with recent infection requiring treatment may cause increase in liver function test. The trend after infection is treated is important which as it tends to improve quickly.
Need to repeat LFT and see how it is fairing. If normalized then need not to worry.
However if increasing then need to look into it.
WOrthwhile getting an ultra sound hepatitis b and hepatitis C tested if not done earlier.
ALso holding cholesterol medications for few days and stopping alcohol will help liver to recover faster.
Over all looks not much to worry about.
Hope this answers your query.
Wish you a speedy recovery.
Happy to help.
