Question: I posted this but no one has responded.

I understand the standard test for gastric cancer is an endoscopy, but my question is if you had both an abdomen ultrasound and an MRI of the abdomen both with and without contrast what is the probability both tests would not identify a gastric cancer? Thanks
The MRI report of abdomen states stomach unremarkable and the ultrasound says nothing!
Only symptom RUQ intermittent pain and occasional heartburn. I’m taking Nexium but getting some occasional heartburn. Thanks

Brief Answer:
Low chances but can't be ruled out 100%

Detailed Answer:
Hi and welcome to HCM. Ultrasound is good for organs like liver and spleen but it is not sensitive for stomach and bowels and it is not used to detect stomach lesions. On the other hand, MRI is much more sensitive and it visualize also intraluminal part of stomach. So it would see some growths or ulcers which are larger than 0.5cm. However it can't rule out changes on stomach mucosa such as dysplasia, small ulcers or precancerous lesions such as Barret esophagus or flat tumors. So there is this minor group of pathology which may be seen on gastroscopy but not on MRI. Also, if you have symptoms, you may have gastritis, Gerd, hiatal hernia or helicobacter and these are benign but should be evaluated with gastroscopy if you have permanent symptoms. Wish you good health. feel free to ask further questions
