I Noticed A Painful Lump In The Center Of My

default
Posted on Mon, 22 Apr 2019
Question: I noticed a painful lump in the center of my armpit last night that made it uncomfortable to sleep on. The lump does not move beneath the skin, it is not red on the epidermis, and went down in both swelling and pain upon taking an ibuprofen this morning. It is only on my left armpit, and is roughly a tad larger in size than a marble.

With this information, is it possible to diagnose what it could be, or should I give it a few days to weeks to see if it goes away on its own.

Your advice and insight is immensely appreciated.

Other information:
23 year old female
Currently living in Thailand from the States and have been scuba diving often (not sure if thats at all a factor)

Thank you for your help.

Brief Answer:
inflammatory axillary lymph node. details given below.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to Ask A Doctor services.
I have read your query with attached photograph showing the lump in armpit.

* As per my surgical experience, the lump is axillary lymph node enlargement secondary
to inflammation, which can be possible without redness of epidermis.

My guidelines at present

- Keep the area clean with antiseptic liquid and dry.
- Continue to take tablet ibuprofen ( 400 mg ) 3 times a day after meals preferably with
an antacid as ranitidine.
- Apply ice pack over the part 5 minutes each for 2 times a day.
- No need of antibiotics at present
- Consume balanced nutritious diet with plenty of liquids to combat the best body
response with natural immunity.
- Avoid direct or indirect pressure application over the area.
- Watch for raised body temperature if any.

* Follow up after 2 days about the progress and further plan of management.

Do feel free to discuss further regarding this.
Wish you best recovery and health.

Regards.
